Home Folks Of The Fest Founder & Producer So Who is Popcorn?

So Who is Popcorn?

PDF | Print | E-mail

Cornelius "Popcorn" Robertson has always had a deep interest in event planning. As a young'n he used to organize the other neighborhood kids and do shows from the garage using the roll up door as a curtain.

Popcorn would organize bike races, neighborhood baseball games and so on,raising money for the prizes from koolaide stands, where he would also make and of course serve "Popcorn".

After high school and a stint in the army Popcorn was drawn back into the promotional aspects of music. "I liked playing music and writing but nothing got me going more as the challenge of creating and hosting "Shows." Managing bands here and there and helping clubs with booking.

Popcorn took on his first big event in Bowling Green Kentucky in 1987. He secured Beech Beend Raceway and held a "Battle of the Bands" 12 Bands in 12 hours. He lost his shirt and pants. Luckily he doesn't wear underwear or he would have lost them too!

Having to raise a family and work a real job plus replace all the clothes he lost in his music endevors, Popcorn went back to his day job but still kept playing and writing music. After to moving to Nashville, to stay close to the Music Industry, he finally stuck in 1990 after 2 failed attempts in 1984 and 1987.

Still working a job and tinkering with songwriting, he recorded his first CD and released it in 1996. He fumbled around trying to promote it and staying gainfully employed. It wasn't until 2002 that Popcorn started re igniting his interest in making another full fledged attempt into music by recording another CD. He met Bill Hamilton at the newly constructed Coal Miners Daughter Recording Studio and was the first one to test out the gear by recording a new album of songs.

Bill and Popcorn eventually formed a publishing company and the promoter started creeping back into him. He came up with the idea of having a songwriter's festival at Loretta Lynn's Ranch while helping Bill at the studio with various projects. "I remember sitting at my desk one day and this feeling washed over me like being hit on the head by a ton of bricks. I was all light headed for a moment and when the feeling was over, something told me to have a songwriters festival. The experience still sticks in my mind today like it just happened. Having this "epifinay" was crucial to give the the strength to stick things out thru the ups and downs of breaking in and learning about the real music business ins an outs."
